Therese, finding herself stifled by provincial life and a dull marriage, decides to poison her boring but inoffensive husband. Emanuelle Riva subtly portrays the psychological and physical deterioration of Therese, while director Franju succeeds in capturing the oppressiveness of the natural world around her.
