Aline Isserman’s film chronicles twenty years of a woman’s life. Juliette, a simple country girl, is in love with Pierre, a sheperd but she is forced into a marriage with a boring railway worker in order to save her family from poverty and homelessness. The husband, Marcel, is transferred from post to post, and becomes an alcoholic, eventually dying, leaving Juliette free to rebuild her life.
