Commandant Favrel is a navy officer married to the job. His naval career is spent training young recruits on ‘La Jeanne d’Arc’ during an eight months around the world ‘trip. Tension errupts in the Favrel household when Favrel’s wife starts begging him to quit the navy and lead a ‘normal’ life. Favrel agrees to a last trip on the ‘Jeanne’ during which he will be commanding Private Hardouin, a young man courting his niece Madeleine.
