A village baker refuses to bake bread when his attractive young wife runs off with a handsome shepherd, a situation that forces the bread-less villagers to take action. Pagnol, combining the best of his humour with sympathetic characterizations of Provencal life, gives an individual drama of infidelity a collective dimension.
